IM Innovations is engaged by Temasek Polytechnic to conduct the Advanced Elective Module (AEM) course which introduces secondary school students to the world of 3D animation. The students get to create their first short animated movie at the end of this 5 day course.
The objective of an AEM course is to enhance the learning experience of MOE secondary schools students through practice-oriented approaches. There were 19 students from Bedok Town Secondary School and Bedok Green Secondary School in the recent run of the AEM course, 2 - 6 November 2015. The 15 to 16 year old students were very excited to learn how 3D animated movies like 'Frozen' were made.
For the first three days of the module, the students were taught the basics of modelling, animation, lighting and rendering through hands-on workshop. Thanks to Cinema 4D, the easiest-to-learn 3D software in the market, the students were able to grasp the concepts of 3D within a short time.
For the last two days of the course, the students were divided into groups to work on a group project. They had fun creating a one-minute short movie with a theme of their choice, such as 'Halloween' or 'SG 50'. The short movies produced were indeed impressive, considering the fact that they had just learned Cinema 4D a few days ago. This proves that with the right tools and curriculum, age is not a barrier in learning 3D!
