Master Class by Matthias Zabiegly: Advanced CG Techniques for Visual Effects Production

Published on

IM Innovations organised the second master class at the MAXON Competence Centre @ Temasek Polytechnic from 29 September to 2 October 2015.  Matthias Zabiegly, the Lead 3D and VFX Supervisor of German studio Aixsponza, was the instructor for this “Advanced CG Techniques for Visual Effects Production” training workshop.

Matthias is an all-rounder 3D visualisation artist who specializes in shading, lighting, rendering and Xpresso. He was involved in many high profile TV commercials, such as the Redbull Transforming F1 and Nike Airmax. His list of clients include BMW, Siemens, MTV, and many more.

The master class was well received. Participants commented that Matthias is a “Master in Cinema 4D technical knowledge” and that he explained “the ins and outs of the software, and what the program is actually doing.” They also added that his teaching was “very detailed and clear”.

To achieve realistic rendering with Cinema 4D, Matthias emphasized the importance of understanding the theory and practice behind lighting and shading, such as the relationship between render quality, render time and Sampling. He also covered the basics of alternative popular render engines such as VrayForC4D and Arnold Renderer. The attendees learned how to create realistic brushed metal and soft organic materials from scratch, by using Reflectance Channel and Subsurface Scattering functions. In order to shorten rendering time and yet still receive high quality result, Matthias showed how he normally set up his render settings. The attendees also received Matthias’ past working files so that they can learn and refer to his past projects.

Matthias also taught Xpresso setups to automate workflow and his clear explanations made it easy for the attendees to understand technical concepts. He also covered the useful new features of Cinema 4D Release 17 such as the Take System, which allows users to create multiple takes of a scene within the same file. The attendees had the opportunity to get one-on-one guidance from Matthias. Some participants even consulted him about their own projects.

Before conducting the master class, we held the Cinema 4D R17 Launch on 28 September 2015, with Matthias presenting the new features of Release 17 as well as Aixsponza’s workflows. Click here to read more about the event.
